Bill Skenteris, 77, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family after celebrating a wonderful Father’s Day late Sunday night, June 18th, 2017.

Born in Stenoma Evrytanias, Greece, he was the son of the late Nick and Ourania Diamanti Skenteris.

Bill came to the United States in 1956 at the age 16. In 1959, he opened the Palmetto Fine Foods on Laurens Rd (which he still owned and operated with his son Nick). In 1964, he married his wife of 53 years, Mena Tsoutsoulopoulos.

He was a dedicated member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and of the Velouchi and AHEPA associations. He served as treasurer for the Velouchi for 41 years and received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” exactly one year ago. He also served on the St George Parish council for six years along with volunteering for various events within the church.

Bill was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He never met a stranger and he was a friend to all. He and his wife enjoyed spending their summers in Greece with family. From there, they would further their travels by visiting countries all over the world.

Surviving are his wife, Mena Skenteris; daughter and son-in-law, Nea and Omar Zambrano; grandchildren, Vickie, Tori, and Joe; son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Sue Skenteris; grandchildren, Sophia, Basil and Viviane; daughter and son-in-law, Gina Skenteris-Smith and Scott Smith; grandson, Vasili Chase; sister and brother-in-law, Fotini and Arthur Chulkas; sister-in-law, Catherine Skenteris; and brother-in-law, Stefanos Raptis.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Skenteris and three sisters, Koula Skoura, Eleni Stamoulis, and Sotiria Raptis.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 20, 2017 from 6:30 to 8:30pm with the Trisagion Service at 7:30 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.

A funeral service, officiated by Father Tom Pistolis, will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral with burial to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

I enjoyed getting to know Bill these many years as a frequent customer to the restaurant. We kidded a lot and had some great conversations! What a wonderful successful life did he have as business owner, proud citizen, active church member, and especially his first priority as a family man. Our community lost a valuable mentor as example of how hard work and diligent effort is the key to a better future.God Bless all of the family during this time of loss. My deepest condolences and sympathy. Remember the lessons of life he portrayed and use the precious memories to cushion this time of grief and remember all the wonderful times.

I have known Bill since I was 7 years old (I am 66 now). I've eaten his food and dieted to get it off. I've lived in his house and watched his TV (the one Nick hit with the hammer), introduced him to my 3 wives, visited him in the hospital when he had a bad wreck, and many other memories that I have of him and his family. So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was a friend of our family for many years, a man of high principles and integrity. How thankful I am that we serve a risen Lord who gives us the promise of eternal life. I know he will be missed terribly by his family but please take comfort that his was a life well lived.
