Dr. Roy Aycock

Dr. Roy E. Aycock of The Ballentine, 7211 Granby St., Norfolk, VA, died Monday, July 23, 2012 at DePaul Medical Center. Aycock was born in Greenville, SC, on April 11, 1926. He graduated from Greenville High School and Furman University, and then received his Master's and Doctorate at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was predeceased by his parents, John Wesley and Dorcas Smith Aycock; his brothers, Marvin B. Aycock, Sr., Earl Ray Aycock, and Barrett B. Aycock; and his sisters, Sarah A. Waddell, Pearl Juanita Aycock, and Alma A. Helmer. Dr. Aycock was Professor Emeritus of English at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, where he taught from 1960 until 1992, when he retired. Dr. Aycock also taught at Auburn University, Georgia Tech, and at UNC-Chapel Hill. Dr. Aycock was also a veteran, serving in the United States Air Force. Surviving are Dr. Aycock's nephew, the Rev. Marvin B. Aycock, Jr. and wife, Sally T. Aycock; a niece, Mrs. Joan Mendelsohn; a great-nephew, Clark Aycock; and other nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at Woodlawn Memorial Park by the Rev. Marvin B. Aycock, Jr. on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Roy Aycock Scholarship Fund, Development Office of Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29613 Arrangements are by Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown in Greenville, SC.
