Gilbert Strickland

Gilbert Strickland, 89, husband of Inez Christopher Strickland, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. Born in Spring Hope, NC, he was the son of the late Thomas and Pearl Murray Strickland. Mr. Strickland enlisted in the United States Army, July 9, 1940. He participated in the battles and campaigns of Okinawa, The Central Pacific, Southern Philippines and EASTERN MANDATES. He received 6 Bronze Star Medals, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Pacific Theatre Campaign and the American Defense Medal. He was retired from Jack Pittman Textiles and was a member of Laurel Baptist Church for over 41 years, having served as Deacon. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Brenda S. Swafford; a son, Rick Strickland and wife, Sue; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a sister, Retha Morris. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Streetman; 10 brothers and sisters. Memorials may be made to Laurel Baptist Church, 2331 Laurens Road, Greenville, SC 29607 or Susan G. Komen for the Cure, PO Box 650309, Dallas TX 75265-0309. Visitation will be held Saturday, January 9, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will be held Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at Laurel Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
