J.B. "Jake" Suttles, 88, of Elon, NC, formerly of Mauldin, died Saturday, December 31, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born in Oconee County, he was a son of the late Fred and Viola Crump Suttles and widower of Hazel Hatcher Suttles, who died in 1981. Mr. Suttles served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Prior to his retirement, he was a truck driver for 42 years with Associated Transport. Mr. Suttles was a member of Rock Creek United Methodist Church in Snow Camp, NC. Surviving are three sons, Billy Gene Suttles of Macon, GA, Michael Steven Suttles of Greenville, and Roy Luther Suttles of Spartanburg; one sister, Sara Dickson of Westminster; two brothers, Jack L. Suttles of Greenville and Furman D. Suttles of Macon, GA; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Mr. Suttles was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Estes and Betty Jane Vinson; two brothers, Fred and Ray Suttles; and one son, Jerry Wayne Suttles. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29303. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 3, 2012, from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 1:30 pm in the Downtown Chapel, with David Suttles, Jonathan Suttles, Hoyt Vinson, Stephen Gordon, Gary Bohannon, and Daemon Whittenburg serving as pallbearers. J.B. was the treasurer for the local AARP which met at the senior center. He always thought about the office staff when they had a meeting and would always bring us some of whatever refreshments they had. When I commented on how good his cake was, he br

Sorry we were not able to attend the service. I had eye surgery last Thursday,and still cannot see well enough to drive to Greenville. Our sempathy is extended to all the family. We will miss JB. He was a very good man. Jim

I handled Mr. Suttles' insurance at Somers-Pardue/HUB International in Burlington, NC and he was such a gentleman. He will be missed.

J.B. was a pleasure to know. He worked with my Dad, Cleary Hinton at Associate Trucking. He was like a part of our family, always there for us. He will be greatly missed. Brian Hinton
