Pryor McGinnis Jr., beloved husband of Erma McGinnis and resident of Greenville, SC, died February 22, 2011 following a brief battle with lung cancer. Born on Dec. 4, 1929 in Blaine, Tennessee to Pryor McGinnis Sr. and Ova Vineyard McGinnis, he spent most of his youth in New Paris, Ohio. Following graduation from the Monroe School in 1948, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. In 1957 he graduated from Tri-State University in Indiana with a BS degree in electronic engineering. He was a professional engineer, NARTE certified EMC engineer and member of IEEE. His career included the NASA Apollo Space Flight Program at Goddard Space Flight Center, 22 years at NCR and subsequent work in his own independent laboratory doing EMC and product safety testing. In recent years, he continued to work as a laboratory assessor for the National Voluntary Accreditation Program NVLAP, through the U.S. Dept. of Commerce. Known for his integrity, humility, kindness and willingness to help others in need, he was a loving husband, stepfather and grandfather and will be deeply missed. He was a member of Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Erma Waldrep McGinnis; a brother, James Carroll McGinnis Myrna of New Paris, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Susan Waldrep DuPlessis Jim of Columbia, SC and Carol Waldrep Burnette, MD of Anderson, SC; three step-grandchildren, Robert V. Shabkie Donna of San Diego, CA, Leah Shabkie McCleskey Jon of Columbia, SC, and James B. DuPlessis of Columbia, SC; and four nieces and two nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 28 years, Jean Loepke McGinnis, his sister, Nava Marsio, and brothers Eldon and Lawrence McGinnis. Visitation for friends and family will be Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown from 11 am to 1:15 pm, followed by funeral service at 1:30 pm, with Rev. Curtis Dubose officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park at 2:30 pm. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, SC 29615 or charity of choice.
