Sheryl "Sherrie" Lyles Alsup slipped peacefully into eternity on January 14, 2009 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, glorifying her Lord and Savior in death as well as in life. Born on August 30, 1952 in Binghamton, NY to Leslie "Bud" and Dorothy "Dottie" Lyles, Sheryl was reared in a Christian home and as a young girl she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. After her graduation from Central High School, Murfreesboro, TN in 1970, Sherrie attended Bob Jones University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1974. She married Rod Alsup on June 14, 1974 and served the Lord as a pastor's wife and missionary with her family in the US, Australia and Canada for over thirty years. An enthusiastic educator, Sherrie taught at Southside Christian School in Greenville, SC, in Australia as a home school teacher to her children, and as a Sunday School teacher throughout her adult life. In addition to her parents, Sherrie is survived by her husband Rod, of the home; children, Thomas and wife Cindy of Inman, SC, Andrew and wife Wendy of Seattle, WA, Philip and wife Danielle of Clarkston, MI, Bethany and husband Andrew Hager of Rochelle, IL, and Christa and husband Aaron Bryson of Simpsonville, SC; grandchildren, Emma, Luke, Anna, Ethan, Chloe, William, Erin, and Kent; siblings, Valerie and husband Gary Thompson, Buddy and wife Kaye Lyles, Jackie Lyles, and Jon and wife Shannon Lyles. Sherrie was predeceased by a brother, Bob Lyles. Visitation will be Thursday, January 22, 2009 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, 6710 White Horse Road. The funeral service will be Friday, January 23, 2009 at 3:00 pm at the funeral home with Pastor Bryce Hager officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made directly to the Sherrie Alsup Scholarship Fund for Missionary Children, c/o Bob Jones University, 1700 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29614. I was at the memorial service for Sherrie in Greenville today. It was a beautiful exaltation of Sherri's Saviour. Sherri and I were in BJU speech class together for two semesters. Our El Ed degree put us together frequently. She became a treasured friend.
