Alonzo “Al” Louis Hoffman, 91, husband of Jean Newkirk Hoffman, of Greenville, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 8, 2018.
Born January 4, 1927 in Ploesti, Romania, he was a son of the late Alonzo and Ruth Hoffman.
Al’s father worked for Standard Oil Company in Ploesti, and after retiring early, the family spent a year in Dresden, Germany before returning to the United States and settling in Euclid, OH. Al attended school in Euclid until 8th grade before the family moved to Lakeland, FL.
After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Maritime Service and made two trips in the Merchant Marine. Al enlisted in the Army and spent a year in Japan in military government with the occupation forces during World War II. On his return from war, he attended the University of Florida graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering.
After graduating, Al began his career with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh and ultimately coming to Greenville as a sales engineer. On his retirement in 1991, he enjoyed many years playing golf, tennis, and gardening. Al was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, The Electrical Engineers Greenville Chapter, Greenville Country Club, Christ Episcopal Church, and then First Presbyterian Church Greenville.
In addition to his loving wife of 61 years, Al is survived by a daughter, Betsy Hoffman Houck (Stokes); a son, Robert A. “Bobby” Hoffman (Priscilla); five grandchildren, William, Lee, and Mary Houck, and Brent (Leslie) and Blake Hoffman; a great granddaughter, Blythe Hoffman; and a brother, Walter Hoffman.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in the Sanctuary.
