Much loved by her family and friends, Betty Iona McIlrath Tietz, 96, wife of Paul Elton Tietz, went to meet her Savior on Saturday, November 2, 2019. Born on December 22, 1922, in Pittsburgh, PA, she was one of seven children of the late John Raymond McIlrath and Anetia Melrose Aber McIlrath.
Betty grew up attending Nadine Gospel Tabernacle in Pittsburgh, PA, a church started by her grandmother. Betty loved music and began playing the piano in church at the age of twelve. She could play any hymn from memory, and her last home concert was two weeks before she passed away. She was always involved in church life, and she most recently attended Second Presbyterian Church of Greenville, SC. Betty and Paul lived in Pittsburgh, PA, Pascagoula, MS, Asheville, NC, and Greenville, SC.
In addition to her husband of 64 years, she is survived by two daughters, Bettijean Krewson and husband, William, of North Wales, PA, and Kathleen Whigham and husband, Martin, of Greenville, SC; a sister, Grace Eiler, of Pittsburgh, PA; five grandchildren, Charlene Krewson Serang and husband, Maqsood, Abigail Krewson Cramer and husband, Isaiah, Anna Whigham Pearson and husband, Tim, Andrew Whigham, and Laura Whigham Smith and husband, Brian; and six great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Catto, and Hannah Miller; and three brothers, John McIlrath, Jay McIlrath, and Robert McIlrath.
A private graveside service was held at Graceland East Memorial Park on Wednesday, November 6, 2019. A visitation will be held Saturday, November 23, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Southeast followed by the memorial service at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel.
