Doris Evelyn Wilson passed away quietly at Greenville Place Senior Living on Sunday, February 10, 2019, from complications of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
A native of Greenville, SC, she was born on February 18, 1934, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry LeRoy Osborne Wilson (nee’ Clara Ruth Hamby).
She was a 1952 graduate of Greenville Senior High School. Miss Wilson received her Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Winthrop College in 1956, where she was active in Sigma Gamma Nu (vice president), The Journal, and the Winthrop Athletic Association. Additionally, she earned her Master of Arts degree from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1960. She began her teaching career in South Carolina, but relocated to Anna Maria Island, Florida (Manatee County) in the late 1950s, where she remained until her retirement in 1989. In retirement, she split her year between winters on Anna Maria Island and summers at Connestee Falls near Brevard, North Carolina. In retirement, she was active in the Florida Senior Games, the Gulf Coast Senior Games, the North Carolina Senior Games, and the United States Senior Olympics where she excelled in table tennis, golf, tennis, bowling, and Bocce.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. John Aspray (nee’ Gayle Elizabeth Wilson); her nephew, Bryan Scott Johnson; her niece, Mrs. William Perry Knight, Jr. (nee’ Tondra Rooth Johnson); her great niece, Mrs. William Corey Barber (nee’ Amber Nichole Baker); her great nephew, Wilson Reginald Baker; and two great-great nephews.
The graveside service will be held Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
