"God is our refuge and strength"
(Psalms 46:1).
Gretchen and i lost track of each other of each other for 40 years until, l through the school’s alumni magazine, i reached out to her in Greenville and learned of the terrible challenges she had endured . We corresponded or talked by phone until a few weeks before her death. I was in awe by how she had maintained friendships on two continents, retined her keenness of mind and sense of humor and above all her generosity of spirit.
When her and our old school opens in a week or so, its American flag will be flying at half mast in he honor

Marty,
I was Gretchen's NYC friend. Came down to visit her sporadically over the last 15 years. I always enjoyed sharing thoughts with her, she had an astute mind. I will miss her and all the clippings she sent to me over the years, all very related to our conversations. I loved Gretchen. We first meet when I lived in Greenville 1980-84. I will see you Hank and Ben at the memorial service. My thoughts are with you.
She is in a better place now.
Laura
Please accept my deepest condolences.
Losing a loved one is probably the biggest heart break of them all, but there is hope.
Revelation 21:3-4 states 3. With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say:”Look!
The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. 4. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
We were greatly saddened by the news of Gretchen's passing. She had become a steady pen-pal with my Dad, Kenneth, her uncle and younger brother to her father, Merrill. We corresponded intermittently for over 20 years, but I picked up the pace considerably with Gretchen following my Dad's death in 2015. Yes, the cut-out articles were fun, enlightening and always apropos to my life. As my first cousin, I attended Gretchen's wedding to Hank. I was all of 10 years old, but I remember it in great detail. Gretchen was smart, eloquent and beautiful. Over the years, she helped my wife and I with sage advice as we raised our son who had mental health issues. We send our deepest condolences to you all. God has a special place for Gretchen, I can imagine her sorting and collating God's prayers right now! Love to you all, Rose-Marie and Ken Smith, Jr.
