We wept and cried the day you left...it broke our hearts to let you go...this beautiful, young girl reaching for womanhood who gracefully battled an unmerciful disease that in the end, stole her future and cheated us of a lifetime of smiles and laughter.
Our beloved daughter, Haven Marie-Ann Ledford, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at the tender age of thirteen. She was feisty and clever, outspoken yet confident, loyal and true. Haven was not the typical "girly-girl" robed in shimmering shades of Pepto-Bismol and rainbow-colored tutus adorned with sequins. Her striking beauty was unmasked and plain, radiating out from behind her soulful blue eyes. She was alarmingly self-aware for a child of so little experience and throughout her illness, maintained a strength uncharacteristic of a tween.
Haven sought out the unusual and scary, enjoyed horror films and unconventional genres of music, and wore dark colors in shades of burgundy, grey, and black. Her humor was dry and her wit was sharp. She saw the world for what it was and at the age of eight, understood fully the unfairness of her cancer diagnosis. Haven relied on her mom for support and friendship throughout the treatments, numerous hospitalizations, and painful procedures. In the hospital over the holidays, Haven witnessed the physical and emotional suffering of others, and despite her personal struggles, wanted to help those less fortunate. She was eager to give and make a difference where she could. Her generous heart landed her with the nickname “the cat lady” as she longed to adopt litters of abandoned felines in search of someone warm to brush up against. Haven was an individual far more concerned for the needs of others than of her own - human and animal alike.
Born on September 21, 2006 in Rutherfordton, NC, Haven was raised by her mother Magan Roper and her father Daryle Lee. In addition to her devoted parents, she is loved and mourned by an enormous family including her sisters, Kyndal Lee and Madison Ledford; brother, Cyrus Ledford; "step-dad", Ronald Harrison; "step-mom", Devon Barnes; step-siblings, Jayden and Priscilla Harrison; grandparents, Melissa Roper, Robert Roper, Teresa Lee, Rodney Ledford, Bonnie Ledford, Denise Harrison; uncles, Ryan Roper, Shawn Roper, and Derek Lee; great-grandmothers, Peggy Ledford, Peggy Cooley, and Lana Hoppes. Haven was preceded in death by her grandmother, Michelle Dunn and grandfather, Steven Lee.
A service of light and love will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes Southeast Chapel.
