John A. Johnson passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018 at the age of 93.
He was born Jan. 30, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA to James Arthur and Rose Elizabeth Johnson. He was reared by his paternal grandmother, Mary Johnson, when his mother succumbed to complications from childbirth.
He served in the Army Air Force during World War II throughout Europe and received six Bronze Stars. He also represented the Air Force in boxing. It was there that he became the friend and sparring partner of Joey Maxim, the former world light heavy weight champion.
He graduated from Clemson College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Textile Manufacturing. He made his career in management in textiles where he was loved by his employees for his fairness and concern.
He was married to Joyce Bell Johnson for 52 years until her death in 2002. He never stopped missing her.
He leaves behind a daughter, Gail, who was very lucky and grateful that he was her father; his son-in-law, Jeff; and many cousins.
He was a devoted husband and father and a friend to many. He was a humble, hard-working man who loved the Lord. He will be missed most of all for his exceptional kindness.
A visitation will be held Friday, June 8, 2018 from 12 noon until 1:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Southeast followed by the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Burial will take place in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
