Lenard Eugene Owens

October 26, 1936 ~ May 11, 2018 (age 81)

Lenard Eugene Owens, 81, devoted husband, father, papa, great-grandfather, friend, teacher and servant; went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 11, 2018.

Born in Walhalla, South Carolina on October 26, 1936 and is one of nine children to the late Reverend Ocie and Mollie Owens.  He attended Furman University and North Greenville on baseball scholarships.  He served as the minister of music at West Greenville Baptist Church for 38 years.  He was a member of City View Baptist Church where he continued his love for music by being a part of the church choir and was a member of Truett Fidelis Sunday School Class. 

Lenard served his community through the fraternal insurance company for forty plus years, where he always sought to help others plan for their future.

Lenard had a contagious joy for life, whether it be fishing with his grandchildren, golfing with friends and family, cornhole with the keenagers, cards with his girls, or horseshoes with his brothers, fun could always be found when he was around.  But beyond all things he sought to live his life to honor his Lord by using his gift of music to share God’s love.  He was a true example of the heart of Christ.

Lenard is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jean Hines Owens, two daughters, Beth Owens Webb (Don) of Easley and April Owens Duvall (Ed) of Anderson; grandchildren: Zach Fisher (Beth) of Easley, Owen Webb (Katie) of Easley, Adam Fisher (Candus) of Easley, Elizabeth Hubbard (Jamie) of Easley, Kara Duvall and Noah Duvall of Anderson; great-grandchildren: Hudson Fisher, Harrison Fisher, Charleston Fisher, Sullivan Hubbard and Kaden Webb.  He is also survived by his brother: David Owens (Joann) of Lake Wales, FL and his sister: Wilma Owings of North Augusta, SC; sister-in-law, Betty Owens of Greenville; brother-in-law, Chester Holmes of Greenville.

Lenard is proceeded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Owens Fisher and his parents, Reverend and Mrs. O.F. Owens; sisters: Mary Thompson (Bill), Eleanor Roper (Cleo), and Esther Holmes; brothers: Joe Owens, Ansel Owens (Vivian) and Lewis Owens; and brother-in-law, David Owings.

The receiving of friends will be held on Monday, May 14, 2018 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest from 5:30 until 7:00p.m.  Services will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at West Greenville Baptist Church, 551 Perry Avenue, Greenville, SC and graveside will follow thereafter.

Pallbearers: Don Webb, Zach Fisher, Owen Webb, Adam Fisher, Jamie Hubbard, Roy Johnson, Jack Cothran, and Glenn Hines.

Honorary attendants are members of the Truett Fidelis Sunday School Class.
