December 16, 1920 ~ January 14, 2020 (age 99)

Obituary

Lila Williams Long, 99, wife of the late Moffatt Grier Long, of 121 Wren Way in Greenville, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, January 14 ,2020.

Born in Spartanburg, SC on December 16, 1920, she was a daughter of the late James Woodside Williams and Esther Lander Williams.

Mrs. Long attended Furman University and her great-grandfather, Dr. Samuel Lander, was the founder of Lander University in Greenwood, SC.

Lila married her beloved Mott in 1945 and after a brief residence in Greenwood, they moved to Greenville in 1948 with their one-year old son. Two more children followed soon thereafter and she settled into the role that she performed with unmatched excellence: full-time wife, homemaker, and mother. They were active members of the Greenville Associated Reformed Presbyterian church and they cherished the many friendships developed with members of the church. Those lasting friendships were especially meaningful to Lila after her husband's death in 2001, and more recently when her health was declining. She received great comfort when special ARP friends and neighbors visited or called to check on her.

The family would like to express their immense gratitude for the love and attention Mrs. Long received from her devoted caregivers: Ingrid Davis, Brittany Carter, Sharon (Shay) Gore, Rosemary Gambrell, and Kristen Davis.

She is survived by sons, Grier Long (Ginny) of Greenville and Jim Long (Cathy) of Auburn, AL.; grandsons, James Grier Long of Folly Beach, SC and Jimmy(Claire) Long of Homewood, AL.; granddaughter, Kelly Long (Brian Schaps) of New Orleans, LA.; and great-grandsons, Jay, Grier, and Sam Long of Homewood, AL.

In addition toher loving husband ,she was preceded in death by a daughter, Landy Long; sister, Caroline W. Mock, brother James W. Williams, Jr.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
