Viola Smith Owens, of the Welcome Community and the widow of Willie Owens, passed away on April 12, 2018 at her home at the age of 96.
Viola worked in the lunchroom at Tanglewood Middle School for 15 years after a lifetime career working in textiles and retiring from Cushman Mill in Williamston, SC. She was a member of Judson Baptist Church for 63 years and most recently a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church.
An excellent cook and caring person, Viola is survived by a daughter, Peggy Reid and two sons, Melvin R. Owens and the Rev. C. Tony Owens (Renita). Grandchildren are: Tim Owens (Julee), Melanie Crews (Craig), Stephanie Owens, B.J. Reid (Jill), Beth Dickson (David), Rebecca Rivera Owens (Enrique), and Ryan Salta (Brian). Great grandchildren are: Brooke Rodgers, Kaylynne Dickson, Elizabeth Reid, Allison Reid, Taylor Crews, Cassidy Dickson, Savannah Owens, Kendrick Laidlaw, Ethan Crews, Kiara Rivera Owens, Colton Salta, Ben Crews, Asa Hutchison, Katie Crews, and Callahan Salta.
Viola was also survived by a very special niece, Shirley Herd, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by granddaughter Alexandra Dickson and daughter-in-law, Joyce Owens; parents, the Rev. Jesse H. and Mattie Luther Smith; brothers Sam and L.A. Smith and sisters, Pearl McCall, Bertha Turner and Thelma Herd.
The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, on Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 12:00 o’clock noon until 1:15 p.m. with a celebration of life service for Viola “MaMa” Owens to begin at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend C. Tony Owens and the Reverend Dr. Gene Lockaby officiating. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons Tim Owens, B.J. Reid, Craig Crews, David Dickson, Brian Salta and Enrique Rivera.
The families will be at their respective homes.
