W. Wendel Cole passed away peacefully on May 14, 2019, at age 91.
He was born December 31, 1927 in Greenville, SC to Ira and Nona B. Cole.
He was a loving and faithful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He is survived by two children, Marjorie Cole Hinson (Lloyd) and Reverend David W. Cole (Mona) and a brother Thomas J. Cole (Marlene). He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Lee Allen (Mary), Beth Owens (Jody), David Allen (Tabitha) and Katelyn Gray (Brandon); and 6 great grandchildren – all of whom he loved dearly. He was also survived by loving nieces and nephews and by a life-long and ever-faithful friend, Tommy Owens.
He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife and mother of his children, Eloise McWhite Cole; his second wife, Nadine Robertson Cole; and his brother, Hugh Cole.
Wendel graduated from Greenville High School in 1945. He worked for A&P Tea Company for 3 years and then went to work for Peoples National Bank in 1948. He retired from Bank of America in 1988 after 40 years of service.
From 1947 to 1989, Wendel also faithfully served five local churches as Director of Music: West Gantt First Baptist, Mauldin First Baptist, Leawood Baptist (two times), Brandon Baptist and Standing Springs Baptist churches. After retirement, he directed the Senior Adult Choir at Taylors First Baptist Church from 1995 to 2003. At the time of his death, he was a member of Greer First Baptist Church and enjoyed watching worship services on his iPad.
Wendel loved to sing and serve the Lord. He was a lifetime member of Gideons International and volunteered with Meals on Wheels Greenville for over 24 years.
A visitation will be held Friday, May 17, 2019 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. at Greer First Baptist Church with the funeral service following at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
