Norman Edward Bobbitt, age 88, son of Frank Branson Bobbitt and Zula Weaver Bobbitt of Durham, NC, died peacefully Thursday, September 7, 2017, in Greenville, SC. A Durham native, Norman was born September 29, 1928, and was the last surviving sibling of sisters Rebecca Mullinnix, Doris Fulton, Barbara Suitt, Lois Rogers, and Phyllis Croom, and brothers Frank Bobbitt and Leonard Bobbitt. Norman was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and graduate of North Carolina State University in textile engineering. He enjoyed a long and successful career in the textile industry and retired from John D. Hollingsworth Company. He was a member of Taylors First Baptist Church and for many years led a men's community prayer breakfast. He was also a valued member of the Greer Lions Club where he enjoyed the volunteer work and camaraderie.

The cross-country train to the naval ship that took him to Guam as a 17-year-old started a lifelong love of travel that continued through assignments in his textile engineering career as far away as Brazil, Germany, Italy, Australia, China, and Japan. Outside of his profession, he was a skilled handyman, mechanic, gardener, and builder, once constructing a playhouse for his girls that could have been a bunkhouse for the cowboys in the westerns he loved from his days as an usher at the Rialto Theatre in Durham. He had many canine sidekicks over the years: Blackie, Ollie and Boots, to name just a few. He coached Pee Wee baseball in Hope Mills, NC, and one of his players, Calvin Koonce, went on to play with the 1969 New York Mets who won the World Series. He was a road trip crooner and a consummate storyteller who regaled family and friends with wonderful tales of his travels and colorful past. We will cherish those memories forever.

He is survived by his loving wife Faye Cannon Bobbitt and his four daughters by his late first wife Mary Alice Britt Bobbitt: Katherine Bobbitt of New York, NY; Laura Berton (Jim) of Ashland, KY and their children Sara, Sam (Becky), and Teressa Berton; Susan Michel (Karl) of Athens, GA and their daughter Claire Michel; Sara Willis (Chris) of Charlotte, NC and their children Spencer and Britt Willis. He is also survived by Faye's daughter Debra Hadley (Jerry) and their children Austin, Justin (Kari) and Ryan (Elizabeth) Lynch; her son Dwight Phillips and his children Jackson, Kasey and Joseph Phillips; as well as by several great grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A Visitation will be held Thursday, September 14, 2017 from 12:30 p.m until 1:45 p.m. at Taylors First Baptist Church followed by the Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Taylors Free Medical Clinic, 400 West Main Street, Taylors, SC 29687, where Norman volunteered.
