Emily Kathryn Brownlee Boyd, 93, of Greenville, the last surviving member of the Brownlee family, and wife of the late Herman Santford "Sam" Boyd, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021.
Born in Laurens, SC she was the youngest child of the late Kemper Bascom and Emily Kathryn Brownlee.
Emily was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenville for 60 years, Alpphia Sunday School Class, and Greenville Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf and tennis, but disliked sitting beside the baby pool.
Emily loved life and lived it to the fullest on her terms. Before her husband's death, they enjoyed traveling yearly to textile conventions with his work at Saco Lowell. Together, they enjoyed playing golf on Sundays with friends as well as with the children. At the age of 47, Emily decided to switch from golf to tennis. She continued to play doubles tennis well into her 80's. In later years, Emily became a fan of the USC Women's basketball team. Most weekends as the children and grandchildren were growing up, you could find her in the stands of a sporting event from football, basketball, baseball, swim meets, lacrosse or soccer cheering on her kids and grandkids.
She will be missed as the matriarch of the Boyd family. She is survived by her children, H.S. "Sandy" Boyd (Nancy) of Greenville, Kathryn "Kaye" Boyd Lindler (Tim) of Greenville, J. Kemper Boyd (Trish) of Charlotte, and Larry Allen Boyd of Greenville. To her grandchildren, she was lovingly known as "Embo" and they were her pride and joy: Katie Lindler (Andrew) of Houston, TX, Holly Lindler Houlihan (Shawn) of Rock Hill, Sam Boyd and Cooper Boyd, both of Greenville, and Miller Gray Boyd of Charlotte; former daughter-in-law, Becky of Greenville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Rachel Holcombe, Virginia Corley, Kemper "Buck" Brownlee, and Sarah Francis Fulmer; and her beloved in-laws, Herman and Nannie Kate Boyd.
The day before her recent surgery, some of Emily's beloved neighbors of 60 years held a celebration in her backyard to wish her well.
A service of remembrance will be held on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 3:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown Chapel with a celebration of her life to follow at the Poinsett Club.
