On Thursday, April 1, 2021, Janice Dale Hughes, 71, wife of Carroll Eugene Hughes, passed into eternal glory. Heaven received an angel (carrying her secret bag of goodies) who made the best pound cake, could fill a table with her legendary southern cooking, could carry a tune that would calm her grandchildren, and was an unselfishly fierce servant of her family and God.
Jan was born on January 24, 1950 in Spartanburg, South Carolina and was the middle of eight children born to Reverend D.L. Griffin and Edith Murrell Griffin.
Jan and Carroll met in Greenville at the Bi-Lo meat market in 1971 and married on August 13, 1972 at Standing Spring Baptist Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina. While raising their three children, the couple was devoted to serving their home church through both local and international missions. The last twenty-one years of Jan’s life were spent ministering and living in community with the Tohono O’odham Indians in Why, Arizona. The ministry included literacy programs, humanitarian aid, sharing the gospel with the surrounding Tribal communities, the establishment of Why Baptist Church, and most importantly, loving those she served.
In addition to her husband, Jan’s legacy will be carried on by her children and their families, Clyde Leon Hughes and his wife, Sarah, and their children, Wesley, Cassie, Walker, Jackson, and Avery of Houston, TX; Carroll Patrick Hughes and his wife, Debbie, and their children, Thomas, Hannah, Isaac, and Caroline, also of Houston, TX; Larry Dale Hughes and his wife, Ashley, and their children, Madison and Bradley of Amarillo, TX; and an honorary grandchild, Ty Antone of Why, AZ. She will also be deeply missed by her siblings and their families, Willene Swafford, Kay Godfrey, Linda Sneed, Robin Miller, Star Mosley, and Steve Griffin.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Denny Griffin.
A visitation will be held Saturday, April 10, 2021 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate and remember Jan’s wonderful life. Burial will be in the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Fountain Inn.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in memory of Janice Hughes to the Tabernacle Children’s Home, 3931 White Horse Rd., Greenville, SC 29611.
