I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
2 Timothy 4:7-8
Sara Margaret Oliver Millener, 71, passed away into the arms of her Lord and Savior on the morning of June 27, 2020. Born August 25, 1948 at Ft. Sanders Hospital in Knoxville, TN, she was the daughter of the late Col. Hugh Russell Oliver and Margaret Thomas Oliver.
A graduate of the University of Tennessee, she was a dedicated officer and regional alumni director for the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women. Her first job was teaching under privileged children for Head Start in Knoxville, TN. She was also proud of her heritage as the third great granddaughter of John and Lurany Oliver, the first settlers of Cades Cove, TN in the Great Smokey Mountains.
Sara was a beloved daughter, a loving wife, a devoted mother and a faithful friend. As a mother, she gave herself fully to her children taking every opportunity to inspire and equip them to make the most of their lives. She instilled complete confidence in her children and left no doubt in their minds as to her absolute love for them. As a daughter, she truly admired and loved her parents. As a sister, she enjoyed a lifelong friendship.
Sara took great pleasure in giving generously to others and looked to encourage and affirm the best in people with sincere kindness and compassion. Sara was also a very intelligent and capable woman, who knew how to get things done and found winsome and creative ways to accomplish whatever vision or task she set herself to accomplish.
For those who knew her, this strong and resilient woman weathered a host of fearsome storms during her lifetime, enduring faithfully through trials and challenges few people can imagine. She persevered and learned and grew with every obstacle she overcame by the grace of God, leaning heavily upon Jesus, whom we know to be well acquainted with suffering himself. In all this, she set an example for those around her and left an inspiring testimony of faith in the midst of great hardship and tribulation. And despite all she went through, she never lost her enduring sense of humor!
She is survived by her friend and sister, Martha Oliver Whittier; her three beloved children, Nancy Millener Lewis, Clay Alexander Millener, and Tally Margaret Ham; and six precious grandchildren, Robert Mills Lewis, Matthew Thomas Lewis, Alexander Terra Millener, Davi Terra Millener, Hugh Wayne Ham and Zellie Haley Ham.
Our family is grateful to First Presbyterian Church of Greenville for all the love and support she received from their pastors and members over the years.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced to friends and families.
