Dr. J. Bennett Collins, husband of Helen Sherrill Collins, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 24, 2014, after a brief illness. Born in Greenville County on December 7, 1923, he was the son of the late Plina Earl and Dula Vaughn Collins. He was preceded in death by his brother Billy Collins and sister Aileen Collins Greene. Bennett began preaching the wonderful gospel of Jesus Christ as a teenager, and traveled 17 years with Evangelist Oliver B. Greene. He continued serving as an evangelist, author, and pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Taylors. He operated a radio ministry called Sermon and Song Ministries until his death. He was a member of Choice Hills Baptist Church. Survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen; son, Bill Collins and his wife Cheryl; grandson, Brian Collins and his wife Charity; granddaughter Sherry Ainslie and her husband Curt; great grandchildren, Abigail and Evan Ainslie, and Josiah, Nathan and Samuel Collins. Visitation will be Friday, June 27, 2014 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Downtown. Funeral Services will be Saturday, June 28, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at Choice Hills Baptist Church. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sermon and Song, 525 Twin Lakes Road, Greenville, SC 29609.
