Martha Pitts Redden Martens, 81, formerly of Greenville, died Friday, March 26, 2010. Martha was born in Greenville County on September 25, 1928, the middle daughter of the late James Alvin Pitts and Sara Elizabeth Tumblin. She spent most of her life in or near Greenville but moved to Newport News, Virginia in 2000. Martha graduated from Greenville High School, attended Furman University, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenville. She was a past president of the Clarice Wilson Garden Club, the Greenville Garden Club, and the Greenville Woman's Club and was a member of numerous bridge clubs. She was an exceptionally talented flower arranger and nationally accredited flower show judge. She received numerous awards for her floral creations. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Bruce Jackson of Yorktown, VA; her sisters, Helen Pitts Mace and husband Bob and Jean Pitts Perry and husband Lynn, all of Greenville; grandchildren, Matthew Jackson and his wife Heather of Lusby, MD and Elizabeth Jackson of Yorktown, VA; and her former husband and devoted companion, Gordon Martens, of Newport News, VA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jones Ray Redden. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 29, at 1:00 pm at Yorkminster Presbyterian Church in Yorktown, VA. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park. I am sad to learn of Martha's death. I saw her smiling face frequently when visiting my Mother at Warwick Forest. She was always cheerful and friendly, and she had a twinkle in her eye that even now brings a smile to my face. She will be missed at Warwick
