Spyros George Grumbos, 92, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 7, 2012. Born on May 22, 1920 in Sparta, Greece, he was the first-born son of George Spyros and Helen Papanicolaou Grumbos. Spyros came to the United States in 1951. He briefly lived in New York and Chicago before settling in South Carolina in 1956. He owned and operated three different restaurants including Pete's in Easley, Heart's Drive-In in Union, and most recently, Pete's Open Kitchen in Greenville. Devoted to his family, he was an active member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral and loved gardening and working outdoors. The family would like to express its appreciation to Miss Eva for her assistance with his care. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Letta Janetakos Grumbos; his daughter, Lena Grumbos Eliopoulos, and husband, Spero; son, George Spyros Grumbos; son, James Spero Grumbos, and wife, Sally; grandchildren, Theo Eliopoulos, Vivian Eliopoulos, Spyros "Ross" Grumbos, and Nicole Grumbos; sisters, Panayiota Grumbos Kontos and Voula Grumbos Tomaras; brother, Nicholas Grumbos; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Niki Grumbos Krabis and Anastasia Grumbos Conits. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with the Trisagion service at 7:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will be held on Monday, December 10, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 406 North Academy Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
