Thomas Batson

September 17, 1953 - January 9, 2012
Thomas W. Batson, 58, husband of Nancy Dill Batson, died Monday, January 9, 2012 after a short illness. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Melrose and Ruby Ross Batson. Mr. Batson was a graduate of Parker High School, receiving his "PHD" with the class of 1971; Anderson College, class of 1973; and Limestone College, class of 1984. He retired from the Information Technology Department of MetLife after 35 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed taking care of his wife, Nancy, and their pet dog, Bogey. He loved cooking and often invited friends and family to taste new recipes. He enjoyed spending time at their home on Fripp Island, enjoying the beach and playing golf. He was an avid golfer and spent many happy hours on the golf course with his buddies. Mr. Batson was a fan of Clemson University and their sports programs. He attended Clemson football games with his father as a teenager and throughout his life spent many Saturday afternoons tailgating and attending Clemson football games. Mr. Batson was a member of Sans Souci Baptist Church and was currently worshipping at Berea First Baptist Church. He enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels for many years. Tommy had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He especially enjoyed teasing his sisters to make them laugh. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a brother: Mel Batson Susan of Baton Rouge, LA; sisters: Nancy Taylor Bobby of Greenville and her two sons, Marc Hudgens Carol Ann of Bartlett, TN and Eric Hudgens Sara of Simpsonville; Debbie Moody Mike of Greenville and their two sons, Chris Moody of Greenville and Jeff Moody Cheyenne of Charleston, SC; sisters-in-law: Sylvia Brown of Piedmont and her children, Susan Brown of Knoxville, TN and Stephen Brown Leslie of Lexington, SC; Debbie Nichols Terry and her children, Hope Nichols of Piedmont and Terry Nichols, Jr. Dawn of Piedmont; brothers-in-law: Maxie Dill Frankie of Greenville and his son, Chris Dill Cindy of Greenville, Benny Dill Pauline of Greenville and their two sons, Byron Dill of Greenville and David Dill Tammy of Greenville; and John Dill of Greenville and his two daughters, Shannon Luzadder Bryan of Greenville and Cindy Gilreath David of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Tony Pannell Pat and their son, Todd. Tommy was a loving and supportive husband, brother and uncle to his family and a loyal friend. He will surely be missed by those who knew him and loved him. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 13, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in the Downtown Chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Berea First Baptist Church, 529 Farrs Bridge Road, Greenville, SC 29617 or Sans Souci Baptist Church, 3100 Old Buncombe Road, Greenville, SC 29609. The family will be at the residence.
